 Music for Jim Conroy
has always been constant in his life. A self taught musician, he began playing
in garage bands about thirty years ago when he was 15 years old. Jim also owned a
night club in Redondo Beach, the Sweet Water for about seven years.
Ten years ago, Jim moved to the Central
Coast. When asked about his goals and aspirations, Jim stated that he would like to
bring back the male jazz singer. Jim's musical inspiration comes from Johnny Hartmann. He was a baritone during the Big Band era (1950s-1960s) with "a
really good singing style." Jim describes Hartmann as a ballad singer
with a swing. Before playing jazz, Jim used to play Rhythm and Blues. He saw in
jazz, a new challenge, one testing his own abilities with "its emphasis upon melody
and complex chord changes."
